Meet Kate Matthews
Job:
Ohmio Automation - Autonomous Vehicle Engagement Co-ordinator.
Job description:
Manage our Christchurch office and local relationships, organise events, work with the media and general support crew.
Work background:
I started in this role last year. It is a big new challenge for me as I have spent most of my career working in public health – in particular, smokefree. When I started with that people used to smoke everywhere. NZ took the first leap to make that change. We are on the cusp of another huge change with self driving vehicles and it’s exciting to be part of a NZ company leading the way.
Favourite part of job:
Meeting new people and learning new things.
Least favourite part of job:
Fighting with my computer.
What I am working on now:
We are soon to launch our first commercial vehicle the ohmio LIFT. This vehicle has newly created technology making it extremely smart. We are making preparations for its’ arrival in Christchurch and getting it approved for people to ride it.
A quick story about a job well done:
Getting our first protoype the ohmio HOP launched here in Christchurch last year was a big achievement. Firstly, and most importantly, the technology team created world-first capability so that the vehicles can just run around a virtual track easily set and they can also operate in a connected convoy. Finding a suitable place in a city being rebuilt to showcase this with good GPS signals was a challenge at the time.

Qualifications:
BPhEd, Dip Tching My background is different from most of the others. We have some extraordinarily talented and highly qualified staff. Our in-house R&D team consists of 30 systems engineers, physicists, mechatronics specialists, deep learning experts, software developers, electronics engineers, technologists and designers. This dedicated unit, (including 9 PhD qualified staff) contains some of the brightest minds ever assembled in the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence arena.
