Meet Paul Shivnan
Job:
GIS and Maximo Manager.
Job description:
Responsible for leadership and direction to the GIS and Maximo teams within KiwiRail. Accountable for all changes, maintenance and process improvement associated with these services and for the delivery of agreed solutions to KiwiRail. Provides strategic direction on the future direction of these services within KiwiRail.
Work background:
I've been with KiwiRail for the past 13 years in various roles associated with IT support, Property Management and GIS/Asset Management System design and support.
Favourite part of job:
Showing KiwiRail staff the power of spatial analysis and how use of GIS systems as a portal to their corporate data can solve a number of their business problems.
Least favourite part of job:
Paperwork associated with looking after staff and the various challenges implementing change to the wider KiwiRail teams.
What I am working on now:
Currently I'm working on consolidation and rationalisation of our existing GIS infrastructure (servers and software) to simplify support and reuse components of our systems in a more efficient manner.
A quick story about a job well done:
Taking an existing desktop application (GeVIS – which tracks in real time the train positions throughout NZ) and by using available technology creating a mobile friendly view of the same data that is available to our users and contractors on their Tablets and Smart Phones (GeVIS Mobile application). By investing in the appropriate technology we were able to quickly develop a viewer which had immediate use with our field staff to enable them to gain visibility of any trains within their general location while working close to the track.
Qualifications:
NZCD (Survey), Post Graduate Diploma in GIS.
Interests outside work:
Hunting and Four Wheel Driving.
