Kia ora everyone
Globetrotting Berry is back in Aotearoa! Now I am in Christchurch with Andrew and some cool friends of his. We are going to be exploring Christchurch International Airport for the next three days. We have special security passes that allow us to go “airside”. This means we will visit parts of the airport where the public aren’t allowed to go.
So follow our adventures as we investigate Christchurch Airport and see how it all works!

Kia ora everyone
Today we found out about all the different things you have to do before you are allowed to enter New Zealand. It is quite a process but I guess they can’t just let everyone in without making sure they are safe and not bringing in anything illegal. Sometimes your bag gets x-rayed to see if you are hiding something that you haven’t declared. In the photo you can see me about to go through the x-ray machine – I just thought I’d give it a try for a bit of a laugh. Haha!

Kia ora everyone
Christchurch Airport is a really pretty airport. There are parts that make you feel like you are somewhere else in the South Island. In the photo you can see me standing in front of the ‘living wall’ with a picture of Aoraki/Mt Cook (New Zealand’s tallest mountain) above it. The living wall is actually a wall of real life plants. It has a very relaxing feel to it. The wall is in the area where you collect your bags. So if you are getting frustrated that your bag hasn’t turned up yet, you can just look at the wall to help keep yourself calm!

Kia ora everyone
I didn’t know that birds were such a problem at airports. Actually I hadn’t even thought about it. If a bird hits an aircraft it is called bird strike. Serious accidents can happen when the bird hits the windscreen or flies into the engines. Christchurch Airport does their best to keep birds away from aircraft taking off and landing. They shoot special bullets into the air that go bang and the birds get scared away. It was lots of fun when we watched Ian Stothers show us how the guns worked!
It has been a cool field trip with Andrew and the other ambassadors. See you all soon!
