CIAL and the Environment

CIAL makes sure it follows all the environmental rules.

Aircraft noise

Managing aircraft noise needs careful planning. It is important to be a good neighbour and not annoy local people. CIAL also does not want a curfew. A curfew means that aeroplanes would not be able to take off and land late at night or early in the morning.

How is aircraft noise managed?

  • Putting off the use of older, noisier aircraft
  • Sticking to flight paths
  • Using noise contours - these help people wanting to start a business near the airport know where the noisiest areas are.

Water protection

The airport works hard to protect its groundwater supply. Groundwater is used for the airport's water supply. It is also used as renewable energy to heat and cool the terminal.

Waste management

All paper, waste oil, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass used at the airport is recycled. All green garden waste is composted.

Energy

CIAL uses energy responsibly. There is even a weather station which looks at temperature and wind direction when controlling air curtains!

Bird management

Bird strike is dangerous for aircraft during take-off and landing. A Wildlife Officer checks bird activity around the airport, and keeps the bird numbers down. The 2009 famous bird strike incident will help you understand why this is so important http://edition.cnn.com/2009/US/06/08/usair.bird.strike/.
