Kia ora
I am an adventurous wee kea named Kacey, who likes to look after the world around me and find out about new and old places. I like to ask lots of questions and share my knowledge with others. My favourite place in our school is sitting in our tall trees and looking out over the Waikawa Marina at all the boats. If I am not there I can be found in Kea and Kererū classes helping them with their learning.
I am looking forward to being part of this field trip.
Talk soon,
Kacey
Kia ora everyone
Today we went to Mangahāwea Bay. This is where archaeologists have found out about how people used to live here. It is a place where some of New Zealand’s first people lived. Among their discoveries were moa bones. Andrew said that moa died out within 200 years of humans arriving. So, finding moa bones means it must be an early site of human settlement. There is also evidence of taro gardens. People would have brought taro over from Polynesia on the waka during the first voyages. This is also evidence that the site is where some of the first people lived.
I am looking forward to learning more history of the Bay of Islands tomorrow.
Catch you then,
Kacey.
Kia ora everyone
Today we went to a place called Motuarohia. People also know it as Roberton Island. We went there by boat, on a sailing ship called the R Tucker Thompson. We went to the same place where the Endeavour anchored when Captain Cook and his crew came to the Bay of Islands in 1769. They anchored near a bay called Otarepo. Some people know this as Cooks Cove. I find it interesting that some of the original Māori names for places have changed over time to English ones. I think it is good to know both. What do you think?
Talk again tomorrow,
Kacey

Well, I have successfully completed the field trip mission! It has been awesome. I loved my time here in the Bay of Islands. If you haven’t been here before it is worth a visit. I’m sure you have learned a lot from the week as I have. I am keen to see where your inquiries from the field trip will take you next. Today we were at Russell Museum again and then at a place called Long Beach. I didn’t think it was all that long, but it probably sounds better than ‘Middle Distance Beach’ haha!
See you all soon!
