Ambassador Eddy

Hello everyone, tēnā koutou,

I am Eddy the new LEARNZ ambassador. From 2019, I will be going on all the trips with Andrew and help look after the other ambassadors from your schools.

I really love LEARNZ field trips about New Zealand's special places. I am looking forward to our field trip to the brilliant Bay of Islands.

Monday 9 September

Kia ora tātou

Today we went on a fast boat to Mangahāwea, on Moturua Island. We went with archaeologist Andrew Blanshard. Andrew talked to us about what they found during their excavations and how these discoveries were able to give them an idea of what early life in the bay was like. People were living here more than 700 years ago. I found it interesting as I imagined what life would have been like.

I am looking forward to going on the R Tucker Thompson tomorrow to learn more history about the Bay of Islands.

Tuesday 10 September

Kia ora tātou

Today we got to sail on a ship called the R Tucker Thompson. It was a lot of fun. I tried to have a go at steering the ship with the ship’s wheel, but I was a bit too short to see where I was going. I also had difficulty using my bill to turn the wheel! It was a fun day out on the water though. And everyone enjoyed themselves. We had some students from Te Kura o Waikare and Russell School with us. They all helped the crew sail the ship.

Wednesday 11 September

Kia ora tatou

We had our last day of the field trip at Russell today. I am quite tired from all the activities but happy to have been a part of all the wonderful learning. It was nice to hear today how much people value the environment and how this is important not just for the sake of the environment (and the plants and animals like me that live in it!), but also how it plays a part in shaping who we are as New Zealanders.
