Everyone, everywhere should know the right action to take before, during and after an earthquake. An earthquake could happen anywhere and at any time in New Zealand. You could be at home, at work, at school, or on holiday.
* If you cannot do the drill at 9:15am, 15 October 2015, you can choose a time to suit you within two weeks of the drill (and still be counted).
Everyone in New Zealand can take part in the ShakeOut. See who is taking part
Ground shaking during an earthquake is not usually the cause of injury. Most injuries happen when people try to move more than a short distance during the shaking.
If you are in an earthquake in New Zealand, 'Drop, Cover and Hold' is the right action to take. If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then:
Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you know it is safe to go out.
If you are outside, move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then 'Drop, Cover and Hold'. Stay there until the shaking stops.
