Meet Hannah – Community Science Coordinator

Kia ora, I'm Hannah. I work for Mountains to Sea Wellington in the Love Rimurimu Project. My role in Mountains to Sea is the Community Science Lead for the plant-outs and monitoring of the restoration programme. I first started off as an intern, starting at Mountains to Sea, while I was studying marine biology at Victoria University.

I then moved into doing more education. And then I had a little bit of experience working in the field, so I got to move into the seaweed restoration project. And now I coordinate and lead that part of the programme.

What I love about my job is that I get to spend so much time in the water. I get to inspire young children – get to see them in the water, see their eyes open up to the magical underwater world – as well as help our declining microcystis in the Wellington region.

It's been so amazing being a part of this project. I love every single moment of my job; from four hours in the water being cold... But it's been really amazing. And, yeah, really meaningful project to be a part of.

Meet Joe – Aquaculture Technician

Kia ora, I'm Joe. I'm the Aquaculture Technician with Love Rimurimu. I basically do everything to grow the seaweed for the project. I collect the fertile material from the ocean. I grow the baby seaweeds in the lab down at NIWA. And then I help take them back out to restore seaweed forests, like the giant kelp you can see behind me.

I have basically taken every opportunity I can to be in the water. From when I left uni in the UK – any chance to volunteer. Any chance to, sort of, spend time diving, I've just kind of jumped at. The ocean is my happy place. And I love that I now get to combine two of my favourite things, which is growing stuff and spending time in the ocean.

Yeah, I'm super-jazzed that this is what I get to do for a job.

Kia ora, I'm Jorge. I'm originally from Spain. Been in Aotearoa for coming up to ten years. I work with Mountains to Sea Wellington. I've been involved with them for the last nine years or so. Started as a volunteer, volunteer snorkel guide, taking groups out in the moana. Now I'm the Marine Lead for Mountains to Sea Wellington and the Community Engagement and Education Lead for the Love Rimurimu Project.

Meet Maia – Mana whenua; Taranaki Whanui

Kia ora. Ko Maia Te Oho Holman Wharehoka toku ingoa. He uri ahau no Te Atiawa, Taranaki me Te Arawa. I live here in the gorgeous Te Whanganui a Tara and have been working on the Love Rimurimu Project for the last year and a bit. I came onto the project on behalf of Taranaki whānui, originally, to conduct some research around natural fibres and how we can use them to grow our rimurimu.

That's still research that I am doing today. But now I also join the rest of the team in delivering some of the education stuff, growing our seaweeds, doing our spore collections, and planting it. And hopefully I'll be planting my natural fibres soon. Kia ora.
