About this trip

Kea are the world's only mountain parrot and they are also one of the most intelligent birds in the world. Kea are endemic to New Zealand and live in the mountains of the South Island. Because of their curious, playful nature they are either loved or loathed. Kea have become an endangered species due to predation and conflict with people. On this field trip you will discover what makes this bird unique, how it survives in such a hostile environment and how we can better protect this important species.

Your kea encounter will be in the mountains of the South Island where kea are sometimes seen. Arthur's Pass Village is a kea hot spot as it is in the mountains on the main road between Canterbury and the West Coast. The car parks of nearby ski fields are also a popular place for kea to look for food and trouble.

This online field trip supports a STEAM-based, cross curricular approach to teaching and learning. Participation encourages curiosity, citizen-science and student inquiry. Access curriculum links and resources plus a glossary.
