Te Araroa trail is a 3000km walking track from Cape Reinga to Bluff. It passes through beaches, mountains, rivers, towns, cities, and countryside.
Te Araroa trail goes from one end of the country to the other. It is about 3000 kilometres long! The trail crosses both public and private land. It passes through beaches, mountains, rivers, towns, cities, and countryside.
You can take months to walk the whole thing, or a few hours or days to walk a part of it. Over a lifetime, everyone can walk the length of New Zealand.
Te Araroa is divided into different regions throughout the country. There are several tracks within each region. Discover more about the different tracks within each region:
Te Araroa is a different kind of trail from traditional tramping tracks. It connects people, towns, and cities. People walking the track can meet a variety of New Zealand’s people, animals, and plants. There are opportunities to visit marae, eat local foods, and stay with caring families. The track shows off much of what New Zealand has to offer. It is the ultimate kiwi experience!
Some Te Araroa walkers record and share their journeys. Those currently walking and sharing their journeys do so through a blog or social media. Read trail stories about their journeys and view images they have taken along the way.
Te Araroa Trust is the kaitiaki for the trail. The trust sets out goals for Te Araroa and make plans to achieve those goals. There are also eight regional trusts.
The trust works with people across Aotearoa to build a trail that belongs to everyone. There are volunteers and donors that help ensure this walk of a lifetime is always growing and improving.
