Meet James Chamberlin

Job:

Section Engineer.

Job description:

Oversee the construction of the 4 bridges at Great North Road.

Work background:

Have worked in England for a year and for Fletcher Construction for 10 years. I have mostly been involved in structures, such as tunnels and bridges.

Favourite part of job:

Being out on site and watching a structure grow right in front of you.

Least favourite part of job:

Doing all the paperwork.

What I am working on now:

The bridges at Great North Road.

A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:

We were pouring concrete into a hole. My foreman had rung me to tell me they had used up all the concrete and the hole was not full. When I went out I couldn’t figure out why we were short of concrete. I thought I must be losing my touch. After some investigation I discovered my foreman had dug more material out of the hole straight after I had measured its size, just so he could hassle me about getting the volume wrong.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Engineering.

Interests outside work:

Fixing and making things, cars, outdoor activities.
