A successful industry
Taupō’s freshwater resource is the key to success in the tourism industry. Protecting these freshwater environments is important for the many local businesses that rely on it. Some of the many freshwater based activities available in the Taupō region are jetboating, whitewater rafting, kayaking, parasailing, bungy jumping, and fishing.
The Taupō fishery
The Taupō fishery is a wild fishery. This means it does not need hatchery reared fish to be released for anglers to catch. The environment at Taupō has all the elements needed for healthy, wild trout – cool, clear water, plenty of food and plenty of spawning and rearing habitat. This environment produces outstanding specimens. The chance of catching a wild, Taupō trout is highly valued by many local and overseas anglers.
The Tongariro National Trout Centre
The Tongariro National Trout Centre has played an important role over the years educating people about the fishery and raising public awareness about the importance of freshwater conservation.
Clean water is the key
Freshwater activities such as fishing are enjoyed by many people. Clean water is critical to plant and animal habitats. Keeping our freshwater resources clean and healthy will ensure locals and tourists alike can continue to enjoy fishing, as well as many other freshwater activities.
