Manager of Human Resources
I’m in charge of people-related strategies for CIAL – making sure the way we organise our people (employees) and their work helps the company be successful. My role includes managing a small team of people and together we are responsible for having the right people in the right roles, doing the right things for us to achieve our goals. We work really closely with managers in every department to make sure we have happy teams who do a great job! At the airport this covers a diverse group of people which makes my job really interesting.
Before I came to the airport, I worked as the HR Manager at the Heritage Hotel in Christchurch, and before that at SKYCITY in Auckland in the HR team. I started my HR career as a recruitment consultant, and then worked in a number of HR and management roles to build my skills in HR and working with lots of different people.
Seeing people working in jobs they absolutely love and getting great results. My team and I play a role in this by hiring great people, giving them training and development to achieve awesome things in their jobs.
The disciplinary side of things – telling people off! I’d much rather our people did a great job and worked well together. That way everyone is much happier, especially me!
We’re setting goals for the year ahead to be aligned with our new strategy, so I’m looking at the goals at a high level and will work with managers to set goals for their team members. It’s exciting to hear what everyone’s plans are for the year ahead, knowing that together we’re all working towards the same goal of being the best airport business.
A while back I trained a group of some of our airport firefighters in leadership skills, as their preparation for progressing to more senior ranks. These blokes were real characters and since they have such an active day-job, weren’t exactly excited about sitting still for a long time and hearing me talk. But at the end of the session we’d had some really good conversations about being a leader. The fire fighters were really excited and motivated to look at how their behaviour had an impact on their team, and how they could have a really positive influence on their work environment. I love seeing people really enjoy learning and realising how they personally can have a big impact on the performance of their teams.
Don’t really have one of these. We try not to make too many mistakes with people!
