Meet Laura Millington
Job:
Christchurch Airport Services cadet (airBRIDGE Programme)
Job description:
Airport safety and security, building and enhancing relationships with airport stakeholders, customer service.
Work background:
Part time shop assistant, after school hours.
Favourite part of job:
The people I meet, including the wider airport community. Helping visitors to the airport.
Least favourite part of job:
Traffic duty during the winter months (it’s cold) and time when I have no specific duty to attend to.
What I am working on now:
Gaining confidence in the job and becoming more familiar with the processes for attending medical emergencies. I am also looking into ESOL training outside of work, as I believe this will help communications with foreign visitors to the airport.
A quick story about a job well done:
Meeting an elderly couple in the terminal who were struggling with the wife in a wheelchair and the husband trying to manage both the wheelchair and their baggage. I approached the husband and offered my assistance. They were very grateful and being from the USA offered me a ‘tip’ which I politely declined. I knew I had made a difference to their day and that was satisfying.
A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:
I’d been advised that the lift in the baggage make-up area needed to be used with care. Not taking enough notice of what I was told resulted in my being trapped in this lift, to the amusement of my colleagues. What have I learned: listen to advice.

Interests outside work:
Travelling, reading and time with friends.
